Century, John Marshall and Lourdes high schools competed in the Minnesota State Scholastic Chess Championship March 24 and 25 at Eagan High School.
Twenty-five Rochester students participated in this event with Century placing fourth, JM, eighth, and Lourdes coming in 14th.
JM sophomore Matt Jensen was Rochester's top-scoring individual with a total of five points. Other students competing in the competition were Brian Bennett, Steve Sendelbach, Ilana Mainaga, Chris Lust, Jason Britson, Ben Simmons, Christa Anderson and Jessica Horn, all from Century; Tom Corcoran, Jeff Olson, Brian Lucido, Justin Dzeja, Hudson Lanier and Jonathan Aho, all from JM, and Mike Glatzmaier, John Gaustad, Tom Garvey, Joe Breen, Mike Poterucha, Andrew Yaszemski, Jason Kuntz, Chris Whidden, Vince Baker and Elliot Wilson, all from Lourdes.
Trophies were awarded to Jensen, eighth place overall; Bennett, 21st place; Sendelbach, 24th place, and Glatzmaier, first place exurban.
