Royals turn back Minneapolis Angels

The Rochester Royals celebrated the holiday on Thursday with a 4-2 amateur baseball victory over the Minneapolis Angels at Mayo Field.

The Royals broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth when Charlie Hinsch scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Stubbs. In the eighth, they added an insurance run as Jordan Martini scored on a single by Matt Sturchio.

Josh Conley pitched the last two innings for a save. In the eighth, an error, a walk and fielders choice put runners on second and third but a nice grab at first by Kevin Ness ended the threat.

Ben Moen was starting pitcher and struck out seven while allowing three hits and no walks for 5 2/3 innings, but was taken out of the as a precaution regarding his throwing arm. Neil Kos walked three and gave up a hit as the Angels tied the game, but the Royals came right back in the bottom of the sixth with the go-ahead run.

The Royals had taken a 2-1 lead in fourth when Ness scored on a hit by Tim Oesterlin, who had two hits for the game.

Drew Block also had two hits for the Royals, who are 10-6 for the season.

"It was a great night for a baseball game," said Ness, the Royals' manager. "The guys gave the fans a good game to watch, our execution in generating the runs needed to win the game was spot on, plus they had a lot of fun."
