SECTION ONE, CLASS AAA

What: Section 1AAA team wrestling tournament.

When: Thursday, first round and quarterfinals at top seeds; Saturday, semifinals and championship at Mayo Civic Center Arena.

Last year: Owatonna beat Albert Lea in the championship dual.

Teams to beat: There are two obvious favorites, Albert Lea and Owatonna. They are the only ones among the 12-team field ranked in the top 10 in state Class AAA. Albert Lea (28-3) is ranked third, Owatonna (45-5) fourth. The Tigers beat Owatonna 42-15 on Dec. 15.

Among the three Rochester teams, John Marshall (14-6) drew the highest seed, fourth. Mayo (6-16) is seeded fifth and Century (8-16) sixth. JM drew a bye in the first round, while Mayo starts against 8-18 Winona and Century takes on 6-23 Faribault.

Quarterfinals: Barring a huge upset, Mayo will take on JM in the quarterfinals. JM barely beat Mayo earlier this season, but the Spartans were missing some key wrestlers. If Century beats Faribault, as expected, the Panthers will wrestle No. 3 seed Austin in the quarterfinals. Austin beat Century 39-32 earlier this season.

Noteworthy: JM has 11 wrestlers with winning records. . .Mayo's Matt Mauseth is the only Rochester wrestler ranked in the top 10 in state Class AAA. He is No. 3 at 145 pounds.
