Selma C. Goodno -- Mabel

MABEL -- The funeral for Selma C. Goodno will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hesper Lutheran Church, Hesper, Iowa, with the Rev. Curtis Fox officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Goodno, 99, of Mabel, former longtime Hesper resident, died Friday (Oct. 1, 2004) at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Selma C. Morken was born Dec. 28, 1904, near Quandahl, Iowa, in Allamakee County. She attended Bear Creek School No. 3 near Quandahl for eight years and then Waukon High School for one year. After working in the La Crosse Garment Factory, she became a housekeeper for families in the Quandahl area. On Feb. 9, 1927, she married Olaf Goodno at the Waterloo Ridge Parsonage. Mr. Goodno died in 1987. The couple lived in the Quandahl, Waterloo Ridge, Highlandville, Iowa, and Bee, Minn. areas. In 1947, they moved to Hesper, Iowa, where Mrs. Goodno was an active member in the Hesper Lutheran Church Ladies Aid Circles and taught Sunday School. She was a cook at Hesper Public School and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Mabel. In June of 1993, she moved to Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, where she enjoyed knitting, tatting and working jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Welper of Hesper, Iowa; four sons, George (Beverly) of East Dubuque, Ill., Roger (Yvonne) of Hesper, Solon of Decorah, Iowa, and Gary (Darleen) of Hesper; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, a grandson, a great-great grandson, three brothers and seven sisters preceded her in death.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to service at the church on Tuesday.
