It’s no question that times are tough right now. Commercial costs keep rising, yet the job market seems to keep shrinking.

On Wednesday, the Retail Merchandising Program at Rochester Community and Technical College and the Salvation Army are hosting the first-ever "Suits to Self-Sufficiency," a one-day event to promote economic independence.

The event will be held at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 201 9th St. S.E., from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Sessions will include career development, professional appearance and dress, interviewing skills and business etiquette.

"The RCTC retail students will be modeling business clothing, assisting customers in creating an interview outfit or developing a business wardrobe and giving sessions on professional image topics," said Suzanne Dinusson, Salvation Army Thrift Store Committee Chair.

Nova Academy students will provide professional hair and make-up assistance, and Workforce Development will be giving tips on resume writing and interviewing.

Proceeds from "Suits to Self-Sufficiency" will go to Salvation Army community services. All Thrift Store profits support programs that assist area residents in need.
