Senior center Digging in the dirt is good for the soul

Gardening is active living. It offers the opportunity for lifelong participation and can be a positive contributor to the environment. 

Numerous studies have shown that regular physical activity reduces your risk of premature death, heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, adult-onset diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, depression and colon cancer. Gardening and yard work contribute to healthy living and are part of all three types of physical activity — endurance, flexibility and strength exercises. Heavy yard work, such as raking and carrying leaves, contributes to both endurance and strengthening activities, while all those stretches and contortions in the garden helps with flexibility. 

Studies have shown that just looking at trees and plants reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and relieves tension in muscles. Given all this, it is no surprise that one study concludes: "Those who are involved in gardening find life more satisfying and feel they have more positive things happening in their lives."

We have a special guest from Dolan’s Landscape and Spas on Thursday. Amy Whiteaker will be doing a potted-garden class. This is the first in a two-part series we are working on with Riverland Generations. Whiteaker will show how you can have a garden even if you don’t have a backyard. On May 17, Riverland will host a bus trip to the arboretum in Chanhassen, Minn. The bus will leave Riverland’s West Building parking lot at 8 a.m. and return by 5 p.m. Call the senior center at 433-2370 to reserve a spot.


Help with tax rebate

The advocates are taking appointments to help people file Minnesota property tax rebates. You need to bring in your income information from last year, 2006 federal income tax return and your new, blue property tax statement. Make an appointment by calling Annie at 433-3462 or Nancy at 433-8376.
