Sewell Ballet to perform March 8

The James Sewell Ballet returns to Rochester for a performance at 8 p.m. March 8 at Mayo Civic Center's Presentation Hall.

The program will include the Rochester premieres of "Appalachia Waltz" and "Different Drummers," as well as "Winter," which was performed here in 1999.

Led by choreographer James Swell, the ballet company combines classic ballet and modern dance. A New York Times critic last year hailed the company's performance there as a "quirky, dynamic take on neo-Classicism."

"Appalachia Waltz," which debuted in 1997, consists of six pastoral movements and includes the music of Mark O'Conner, Edgar Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma.

A pre-performance discussion will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Presentation Hall. While in Rochester, the Sewell Ballet will present a matinee performance for local elementary school students, and will teach classes at the Janet Lang Dance Studio and Allegro School of Dance/Rochester Ballet School.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are $18 for adults, $16 for senior citizens and groups, $8 for students. There is a student-rush ticket price of $9, available at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster (252-1010) and at the civic center box office.
