The changing of the guard at the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department officially takes place Friday afternoon when Steve Borchardt retires and Steve VonWald is sworn in as sheriff.
Borchardt has been sheriff since January 1991. He announced his retirement last month to become a coordinator in the development of a statewide radio communication system for emergency responders.
The county board appointed VonWald, director of law enforcement services, to serve the two years remaining in Borchardt’s term.
A coffee for Borchardt and VonWald will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in the board room at the Government Center in Rochester. A program, which will include a swearing-in ceremony, will be at 2:30 p.m.
