Sign up for Fire Academy

People interested in learning more about firefighting can participate in the annual Citizens Fire Academy this fall.

Dan Slavin, deputy fire chief of the Rochester Fire Department, said applications are being accepted for the academy, an eight-week course that begins Sept. 10 and ends Oct. 29.

The goal is to expose participants to the duties of a Rochester firefighter. Slavin said participants should leave the course with a better awareness of the daily activities of a firefighter and become ambassadors for the department.

To participate, people must be at least 18, a resident of Olmsted County and in good physical condition. There is a $25 fee. Applications are available at fire department headquarters at City Hall. Applications must be received by Aug. 23.
