Smith, Lynx cause Mercury to drop

MINNEAPOLIS -- Katie Smith scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half Friday night, leading the Minnesota Lynx past the Phoenix Mercury 75-51.

Tamika Williams added 12 for the Lynx (8-19), who won for just the second time in the 13 games. The 24-point margin of victory tied a team record.

Jennifer Gillom led the Mercury (9-18) with 12 points. Phoenix, which led 29-27 at the half, has lost 19 games in a row on the road. "I felt it was one of our better halves but we didn't take the opportunity presented to us," said Mercury coach Linda Sharp.

Smith, who sat out 13 minutes of the first half after picking up three quick fouls, made nine of 10 from the field. The Lynx shot 54 percent (31-of-57).
