Spartans held to three hits

MANKATO — Laura Vanderhoof pitched a three-hit shutout as Mankato East blanked Mayo.

"We faced a very good pitcher on a very cold day," Mayo coach Steve Riles said. "She kept our batters off balance, but it was good for us to face someone of that caliber early in the season. We had a couple of chances to score but couldn’t get it done."

Sophomore Sarah Bohlen made her first varsity start on the mound for Mayo. She gave up six runs and struck out six in six innings. Bohlen was also 2-for-3 at the plate, while freshman Courtney Palmer was 1-for-3.

"Sarah ran in to trouble in the third and fifth Innings with a couple of walks and giving up some hits, but we felt she demonstrated the desire and ability to become a quality pitcher as she gets a little more experience," Riles said.

EJ Scharmer was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and five RBIs for Mankato East, and Nicole Ries was 3-for-4.

Mayo will play in the Austin Invitational today and Saturday. The Spartans open with Eden Prairie at 5 p.m. today.
