Pinch-hitting for the vacationing esteemed Cluttered Mind, a.k.a, Steve Webb. . . Here are a couple of my favorite things from the weekend in sports.
Favorite 'you couldn't have scripted it any better' moment: Seattle Mariners' John Olerud belts a long foul ball down the right field line and into the third deck at Texas -- to the feet of a solitary sixty-something fan who's holding a handmade sign presumably honoring his favorite player: "Ruuud".
Favorite candid 'it sounded better when I said it than it looks in print' quote, from Vikings coach Mike Tice in Sunday's Minneapolis Star Tribune: "We know that we're going to be like every other team in this league: We're not going to have good players at every position. If we're sitting here thinking we're going to come out of this free agency, this draft, the college free agency and the second wave of free agency with good players at every position, then we're smoking dope. Then we're high."
What the Vacationing Mind might be thinking today: "It's really not such a bad drive to West Virginia -- but I was supposed to be in Columbus, Ohio, for a harmonica players' convention. Must've missed an exit somewhere."
