Sophus 'Stoney' Stoen -- Spring Grove

SPRING GROVE -- The funeral for Sophus "Stoney" Cornelius Stoen will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with the Rev. David H. Andreae officiating and military honors by VFW Post 1977 of Decorah. Burial will be in the Big Canoe Cemetery.

Mr. Stoen, 82, of Decorah, died Friday (Dec. 23, 2005) at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Spring Grove and attended a rural school there. He served in the Navy from 1941 to 1946. On March 20, 1947, he married Palma "Polly" A. Engan at the Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in Dorchester, Iowa. He worked as a trucker, and the couple farmed for a short time. Then, until his retirement, he worked as a foreman for Winneshiek County. He was a member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church, where he was a trustee and, together with his wife, served as a custodian.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, David (Dorothy) of Decorah, Randy (Stephanie) of Highlandville, Iowa, Jim (Lori) of Spring Grove and Larry of Highlandville; three daughters, Linda (John) Miller of Corydon, Iowa, Diane Reategui of Port Richie, Fla., and Bonnie (Dwight) Nichols of Highlandville; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond (Darlene) of Decorah and Herbert of Highlandville; and one sister, Thelma Ellingson of Hesper, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.


Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove, and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
