MABEL-CANTON

Tonight, 7 p.m.,
at Adams
Records: L/P is 0-1, and Mabel-Canton is 1-0.

Last game: L/P lost to Cleveland 32-18 in the season opener. Mabel-Canton beat Truman 62-6 in the opener.
Last meeting: L/P lost at Mabel-Canton 49-8 in the first round of the section playoffs last year.
L/P notes: The Athletics have never beaten the M-C Cougars. Last close game came in 2004 when L/P lost in a shoot-out 38-31. The Athletics will likely need to score in the upper 20s or lower 30s to be in this game. Last week, quarterback Sam Stier threw for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns, so his arm might be a factor in whether this game is competitive.
Mabel-Canton notes: The Cougars like to run the ball and they have two backs that can get it done. Blaine Coyle and Laurence Caldwell both ran for over 100 yards in wins over Lyle/Pacelli during the regular season and playoffs last year.
Quote: "They only have about four plays that they run, but they run them well and they keep coming at you," L/P coach Mark Buntje said. "Our defense has step up and keep us in the game. We got behind early last week and it didn’t turn out too well. We have to hang around and try to catch them in the fourth quarter."
ONALASKA LUTHER
AT SOUTHLAND
Friday, 7 p.m., at Adams

Records: Southland is 1-0, and Onalaska Luther is 1-0.
Last game: Southland beat Wabasha-Kellogg 26-0 in the season opener. Onalaska beat Blair-Taylor 35-0 in its opener.
Last meeting: The two teams haven’t played.
Rebels notes: The Rebels defense has only played one game and already recorded a shutout. The defense had a pair of turnovers last week and stopped two trips by Wabasha-Kellogg into the red zone. Offensively, the Rebels rushing game is in top form. With a bulked-up Winston Smith moving to halfback, the power bursts of Jake Chapek are even more effective. Just for the fun the Rebels mix in fullback Brian Voigt to add a different look for the defense. Chapek was over 100 yards last week, and Smith was only six short of the century mark.
