ROSE CREEK — The Southland Rebels softball team got its first win of the season on Thursday.

The initial victory for the Southland girls came in the first game of a doubleheader against Fillmore Central/Lanesboro at the Rose Creek City Park.

Southland won the opener 5-2 in the Three Rivers Conference twinbill. FC/L then came back with an 11-8 win in the late game for a split.

In the opener, the Rebels collected a total of eight hits in their first win. Heather Sheely led the way with two hits, including a double.

"It felt really good to finally get a win," Southland coach Greg Schulte said. "The girls were feeling the pressure of the losing streak and it was nice to get into the win column."

Brandi Schammel got the pitching win with six strikeouts in the opener. The Rebels trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, when they rallied with two runs to take the lead for good.

"The girls picked it up with a late offensive surge," Schulte said. "I was glad they were still fighting in there. Brandi threw well and we got the win."

In the late game, the Rebels were the visitors in the make-up date. Southland led 4-2 in the fifth inning, but couldn’t hold the lead.

Megan Mullenbach had three hits in the late game, but it wasn’t enough for the Rebels in the loss.

Southland (1-14, 1-12 TRC) plays in the Stewartville Tournament today at Bear Cave Park. The first game is against the host team at 5 p.m., then the Rebels play another game at 7 p.m.
