Stewart E. Cunningham -- Rochester

ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Stewart E. Cunningham will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ranfranz Funeral Home Chapel in Rochester, with the Rev. Bruce Buller officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Viola.

Mr. Cunningham, 90, of Las Vegas, an Olmsted County native and former Lewiston nursing home owner, died April 10, 2002, at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas.

Born Dec. 9, 1911, in Viola Township, Olmsted County, he grew up on a farm there and received a degree in social work from Minneapolis Bible College. During World War II, he worked at Pacific Engineering California building floating docks for the war effort. In 1947, he returned to Minnesota, purchased the farm where he grew up, and in 1950 became a partner in the ownership of the first nursing home in Winona County, Etta-Del Nursing Home in Lewiston. After his retirement in 1966, he moved to Long Beach, Calif., and later to Las Vegas. Mr. Cunningham was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lewiston and St. Charles, and was master of the Lewiston lodge for two years. He was a member of the Eastern Star in Lewiston and St. Charles, and the Scottish Rite in Winona and Rochester.

Survivors include a sister, Ava Harvey of Minneapolis; and his special friend and caregiver, Takashi Uede of Las Vegas. Five brothers preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 10 a.m., with Philip G. Soderberg officiating.
