CANTON -- Mabel-Canton Superintendent Richard Nance was suspended with pay on April 11, according to Margaret Miller, chairwoman of the school board.
Nance, who has been superintendent and elementary principal for nearly three years, was also told he couldn't return to the school without written permission from Miller.
Miller said she couldn't comment on reasons for the suspension because of data privacy rules. All she could say was "the district is taking appropriate steps to address this issue."
Lowell Hareldson, current high school principal, is acting superintendent, Miller said.
Nance said he was surprised by the action. "I am not aware of the reason for the suspension myself," he said today from his home in Cresco, Iowa.

The matter is now being handled by attorneys for both sides, he said.
