Swine system is topic of field day

From staff reports

There will be a field day to view a deep-bedded, farrow-to-finish swine production system Tuesday on a farm near Preston. The day begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. at the Ben Rein farm.

The pilot project is part of a pork checkoff-funded project. The Rein pilot project is seven months long and ends in December. It includes data collection on 70 litters farrowed in three groups during June and July.

The field day will address gilt diets, parasite control, vaccinations and identification; artificial insemination use; adopting all-in/all-out pig flow; manure management for deep-bedded barns and solid manure; and free-stall farrowing pens.

Participants must wear clean clothing. Plastic boots will be provided.
