Taking the 'cowboy' out of the recruits

Police recruits learn bad habits from TV and movies, says Tom Kilhoffer. The 56-year-old firearms training coordinator for the University of Illinois Police Training Institute shows students they can't hold their pistols like action-movie stars or roll on the ground and expect to hit a target.

"We take the cowboy out of them," he says. Mornings are spent on gun-based role-playing scenarios.
