Telescope protesters arrested at meeting

MINNEAPOLIS -- Five protesters demanding an end to the University of Minnesota's participation in the controversial Mount Graham telescope in Arizona were arrested Friday by university police after they interrupted a board of regents meeting.

The protesters, from the environmental activist group Earth First!, were charged with disrupting a public meeting and were booked into the Hennepin County Jail.

The observatory, built by the University of Arizona, includes what will be one of the world's largest telescopes. The telescope is expected to be completed in 2004.

Earth First! opposes the project for what it calls a "circumvention of environmental laws and destruction of endangered species habitat."
