Torchia skis to 11th place at Birkebeiner

Rochester Lourdes junior Michael Torchia was the highest local finisher last weekend at the annual American Birkebeiner cross country ski marathon in Wisconsin.

Torchia, 16, placed 11th overall in the Freestyle Kortelopet division. He completed the race in 1 hour, 1 minute, 43.4 seconds.

Torchia was 11th overall among 1,184 men and women in his division.

Torchia placed second among 88 finishers in the Men's 15-16 age division, just tenths of a second behind Christopher Sasse of Bloomington.

Torchia won a high school cross country state championship in Class A last November.
