Two students from Austin Public Schools have been selected as winners of the district’s Voice of Democracy contest.
John Register, an 11th-grader, placed second, and Jon Koser, a ninth-grader, placed third.
Created in 1947, the audio-essay contest is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students to voice their opinion in a three- to five-minute essay based on an annual theme.

According to school officials, 27 tapes were judged, all of which had won school contests before advancing to the district contest.
The students and their parents and teachers will be invited to the VFW district meeting on Feb. 3 to receive recognition.
