UK plans universal access to high-speed Internet

Britain’s government says it will provide universal access to broadband Internet connections as part of a plan to spur the country’s technology sector.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Tuesday that high-speed Internet access has become as "indispensable as electricity, gas and water."

Brown says investment in digital technology is as critical now as building roads, railways and bridges was in the 19th century.

He wrote an op-ed piece for the Times of London on the subject ahead of publication of the government’s Digital Britain report.
