A whole lot of volleyball will be played this weekend at the University Center Rochester Regional Sports Center, but the RCTC Yellowjackets won’t be on the court.

Instead, eight teams from around the nation will compete for the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III volleyball championship.

The No. 1-ranked Brookhaven College Lady Bears (28-8) from Farmers Branch, Texas, will be making their fifth consecutive appearance at nationals after finishing third last year. They are led by Katie Schlup and Brooke Shelton, who both average more than three kills per game.

Another team that has been to nationals before is the No. 5-ranked Warriors of Ridgewater College in Willmar, Minn. They will make their fourth straight appearance in the tournament after placing second in 2007.

Defending national champion Central Lakes of Brainerd, Minn., won’t be participating. After seven appearances at nationals since 2000, including three championships, the Raiders struggled this year, finishing 17-19 overall.

The field includes No. 2 Harper College of Palatine, Ill.; No. 7-ranked Alfred State College of Alfred, N.Y.; No. 9-ranked Hibbing Community College of Hibbing; No. 10-ranked Catawba Valley Community College of Hickory, N.C.; Nassau Community College of Garden City, N.Y.; and Anne Arundel Community College of Arnold Md.

This will be the fourth year in a row Rochester has been the site for the tournament, hosted by the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission.
