WYKOFF -- The funeral for Walter G. Stender, 92, a retired Wykoff-area farmer, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Rev. Peter J. Sestak officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Stender died Sunday evening (Jan. 13, 2002) in Stewartville Care Center. He was born May 1, 1909, in Fountain Township, Fillmore County. He farmed in the Wykoff and Fountain areas his entire life. He married Pauline Duppary on Dec. 10, 1940, in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff, the Rev. Stein officiating. The couple retired in 1977 and moved to Wykoff. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and pitching softball games. He was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Nevin (Nancy), of Spring Valley, and Alan, of New Prague, Minn.; one daughter, Suzanne Norris, of St. Paul; nine grandsons; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Friends may call at the Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and at the church on Wednesday for one hour before the service.
The family prefers memorials.
