Web site accepts ideas for coin

ST. PAUL -- Minnesotans who want to help design the state's official quarter can deposit their ideas on a new Web site launched Monday.

The window for submissions is open until Nov. 1. The Web site is www.quarter.state.mn.us.

Visitors to the site are asked to take a survey to offer a sense of what types of things Minnesotans most want to see on the coin. It also invites people to submit short essays about their ideal quarter design.

Although people can enter sketches, a 15-member state commission that will forward as many as five ideas to the U.S. Mint will do so in narrative form. The Mint does the designs.

Once the ideas are in picture form -- probably next February or March -- the public will get a chance to sound off on their favorites.
