Wesley C. Swenson — Stewartville

STEWARTVILLE — The funeral for Wesley C. Swenson will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville. Rev. Robert Bergland will officiate and burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Mr. Swenson, 94, formerly of Grand Meadow and Stewartville, died Friday (March 27, 2009) of natural causes at St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview.

He was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Ellsworth, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm near Ellsworth and attended Spring Valley Country School in Hamilton County, Iowa. He farmed with his father and brother Earl on the family farm until his marriage on Aug. 5, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, to Mary E. Moon. The couple farmed in rural Randall, Iowa, until 1960, when they moved and farmed in rural Grand Meadow until their retirement in 1985. They moved to Stewartville, where they lived until Mrs. Swenson’s death on Dec. 17, 1998.

Mr. Swenson was a past member of Grand Meadow Lutheran Church and the Stewartville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and time spent with his family.

He is survived by two sons, Larry (Bonnie) of Eyota and Michael of Davenport, Iowa; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Huibsch of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Dorothy Johnson of Story City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents; two sisters, Edna and Dell; and three brothers, Alvis, Merle and Earl.


Friends may call an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday morning.
