FERGUS FALLS, Minn. — Growing conditions were perfect for wheat this year and several new varieties showed their mettle for good yield and disease resistance.

A North Dakota State University 2007 release, Faller, garnered good yield and is a hedge against scab, said Northwest Research and Outreach Center small grain specialist Joachim Wiersma. Wiersma made the comments at a Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers meeting in Fergus Falls, one of several stops across the state.

The variety showed good resistance to tan spot and leaf rust, he said.

University of Minnesota’s RB07, released last year, is noted for its yield and leaf rust.

The top three picks from varietal trials are Briggs, Faller and Glenn.

Tan spot, leaf rust, fusarium head blight and bacterial stripe were the disease issues for the year, said Extension plant pathologist Charla Hollingsworth.
