DES MOINES, Iowa -- Austin's Mike Wuertz took a no-decision on Sunday afternoon in his latest pitching start for the Iowa Cubs against the Salt Lake Stingers in Class AAA baseball action at Sec Taylor Stadium.
Jayson Bass hit a three-run home run and led the Iowa Cubs past the Salt Lake Stingers 3-2. Wuertz held the lead in the top of the fifth, but came up one out short of completing the inning and failed to qualify for the win.
Wuertz (8-4) gave up a home run to Keith Johnson of the Stingers in the fifth and was replaced on the mound by Steve Sinclair.
The fourth inning home run by Bass made a winner out of Iowa reliever Sinclair, who improved to 6-2. Pat Mahomes recorded his 11th save of the year for the Cubs.
Salt Lake starter Chris Bootcheck was the tough-luck loser and fell to 1-1 on the year. The Cubs won three of the four games against the Stingers and moved to within three games of Salt Lake in the Central Division standings.
