The All-American Cape Classic Youth Basketball Tournaments, featuring grade-level competition for boys (grades 3-12) and girls (grades 4-12), is seeking at-large entries in all grade levels for its national championship June 20-24 in Akron, Ohio. Rochester Youth Cheerleading Association's registration is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4, and 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. May 14, in the commons of Rochester Community and Technical College's Heintz Center, 1926 Collegeview Road SE (across from Olmsted County Hospital and Federal Medical Center).

Children entering grades 4-8 in the fall of 2002 are eligible for RYCA.

RYCA board members recommend attending a registration session because they'll be present to answer questions; registrations received May 4 and May 14 will get priority status (eighth grade may be limited). Sample sweatshirts, T-shirts and skirts will be available for determining size. RYCA won't be held responsible for clothing ordered that's the wrong size; a $5 fee will be charged for exchanges. And coaching information will be provided for all interested coaches.

Skirt Swap: Previously owned skirts will be for sale at registration for $15. Participants are asked to bring their skirts to registration.

Tryouts for the 2002-2003 Rochester All Stars competition cheerleading squads are getting under way. Tryouts for the varsity squad (grades 9-12) are today and Thursday at 6-8 p.m. at Gage East Elementary gym, 930 40th St. NW. Final varsity tryouts are 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday in the wrestling gym of Rochester Century, 2525 N. Viola Road.

Tryouts for the All Stars Juniors squad (grades 9 and under) are 6-8:30 p.m. April 22-25 in Gage East gym, with final tryouts 5:30-8 p.m. April 26 at the Century wrestling gym.

Tryouts for the All Stars youth program (K-grade 6) are 6-8 p.m. April 29 to May 2 at Gage East gym, with final tryouts 5:30-8 p.m. May 3 at the Century wrestling room.

The All Stars have won numerous state, regional and national honors.

Rochester Youth Soccer Association's Recreation games continue this weekend at the Fuad Mansour soccer fields east of University Center Rochester's Heintz Center.

Practices and games will be held regardless of weather, except when there's lightning. The boys traveling U-10 (born between Aug. 8, 1991, and July 31, 1992) and U-15 (born between Aug. 1, 1986 and July 31, 1987) teams are still looking for a few more players. Registration forms are available at Play it Again Sports and may be sent, along with a copy of the player's birth certificate, to RYSA, PO Box 6402, Rochester, MN 55903.

The Rochester Matmen rounded out its season by competing in two tournaments last weekend. On Friday, the Matmen competed in an Owatonna tournament. Ceth Marbry placed first, Jason Cirksena second, Chad Zastrow third, and Nick Priebe and Marcus Wolf both took fourth.

In the Jaycees State tournament on Saturday at Rochester Community and Technical, Corey Zastrow, Chad Zastrow, Marcus Wolf, Isac Kautto, and Carter Williamson all placed first. Nick Borth placed second, Ryan Williamson third and Charlie Hinsch fourth.
