YOUTH SPORTS The Rochester U12B girls hockey team finished their season in fine style by taking 3rd place at Regionals in Apple Valley this past weekend. Rochester won their first game 5-0 over Cooper before losing 2-1 to eventual Regional Champion Chisag

The Rochester Superior Screeners Squirt A hockey team took second place in a Woodbury tournament Feb. 21-23. Rochester lost to Cottage Grove in the finals 3-2. On its way to the championship game, Rochester beat Mankato White 5-0 behind two goals each by Chris Goslee and Andrew Block. The fifth goal was scored by Brandyn Chezick, assisted by Michael Warzala, and the shutout was by goalie Andrew Bromberg. The team's forechecking and stout defense limited Mankato to six shots for the game. Rochester then beat Faribault 3-2 after falling behind 2-0 in the first period. Chris Goslee had two goals and one assist, with Jacob Sikkema scoring the other goal. Goslee scored the eventual game-winner at 3:57 of the third period on a wrist shot near the right face-off circle. Goalie Michael Hanson stopped 14. In the championship, Rochester lost 3-2 to Cottage Grove.

Rochester 15UB girls ended their season with a second-place finish at a regional tournament in Apple Valley. The team placed second in district playoffs. The team finished 39-8-1, with two first-place, two second-place and two third-place trophies, and a second-place finish in districts.

Rochester Squirt B2 Play It Again Sports team placed first in the Rochester City Tournament and first in the Skills Competition recently. Players: Andrew Ibarra, Ben Tilson, Taylor Craig, Brendan Moiser, Alex Nordlund, Blake Heroff, Blake Waters, Joe Furness, Jayce Semmen, Joe Canakes, Wyatt Travis, Ryan Yetzer, Alex Heroff, Dan Rossman. Coaches: Phil Rossman, Vern Yetzer, Jeff Furness.

In the evening game of the first round in the Minnesota Hockey Bantam "A" State Tournament, Moorhead defeated Rochester North 4-1. Rochester North's goal was scored by Eric Amundson. Rochester North moves into the consolation bracket and faces Buffalo at 2 p.m. Saturday. All tournament action is at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center in Cloquet..

North American Youth Sports announced recently that there are still openings for its annual spring baseball tournament April 11-13 at Mayo High School. The tournament will feature 10 brackets for girls and boys in grades 5-12. Call the toll-free NAYS tournament hotline at 800-787-3265.


It is not too late: registrations for the 2003 Rochester Youth Baseball Association season are being accepted through March 31, after which time players will be placed on a waiting list.

Rochester Youth Wrestling Association news: On March 1, Zachary and Michael Bunnell traveled to Fargo, North Dakota, for the "Battle On The Border" Wrestling Tournament. Zachary captured 2nd place and Michael captured 4th place.

Other RYWA wrestlers competed in District Qualifier Tournaments recently in Plainview, Austin and Stewartville. On March 7, the following wrestlers competed at Plainview, Preschool:Caleb Johnson placed 4th.Kindergarten:Paul Schroeder placed 1st.

First Grade:Joshua Flores placed 1st, Keatton Steiger placed 2nd, Denley Minske placed 3rd and Ethan Carlson placed 4th.

Second Grade:Brett Bradford placed 1st, Riley Donovan placed 2nd.

Third Grade:Mitch Brown and Braden Sweeney placed 2nd, Jared Flores placed 3rd.


Fourth Grade:Marcus Wolf placed 1st, Jerry Flores and Joe Ginther placed 3rd.

In Austin on Friday, March 7, Seventh grader Daniel Tenney captured 1st place.
