Z-M pitchers team up for victory

Zumbrota-Mazeppa got stifling performances from two pitchers and edged Plainview 3-1 in a non-conference softball game Friday at Zumbrota.

Z-M freshman Brianna Sturm (5-1) pitched six innings for the win, with junior Jessica Huneke saving the game by pitching the Cougars out of a jam in the sixth.

Huneke entered in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, and she struck out three Plainview batters to end the threat. She retired three straight in the seventh.

"They make a nice combo," Z-M coach Kevin Nelson said of his pitchers. "Brianna is very fast, and has been very consistent, but she just got a bit out of rhythm. Jess just has great control; she has walked only one batter in 34 innings."

Z-M scored all three runs in the second inning. Stacy Borgschatz and a run-scoring hit, and Megan Gregory and Sturm had RBI sacrifices. Z-M improved to 7-3, and Plainview is 7-4.

Wabasha-Kellogg 9, Cannon Falls 6

Shelley Arens had three hits and three RBIs to guide the Falcons in Cannon Falls. W-K finished with eight hits and also walked eight times.

Spring Grove/Caledonia 10, DeSoto, Wis. 0 (5 innings)

Bethany Bergsgaard threw a perfect game for SG/C, getting 10 of the 15 outs on strikeouts. She now has 61 strikeouts and just four walks in eight games and has a 6-2 record. Kati Tweeten had a single and double and drove in two runs.
