Z-M pitchers team up for victory

Zumbrota-Mazeppa got stifling performances from two pitchers and edged Plainview 3-1 in a non-conference softball game Friday at Zumbrota.

Z-M freshman Brianna Sturm (5-1) pitched six innings for the win, with junior Jessica Huneke saving the game by pitching the Cougars out of a jam in the sixth.

Huneke entered in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, and she struck out three Plainview batters to end the threat. She retired three straight in the seventh.

"They make a nice combo," Z-M coach Kevin Nelson said of his pitchers. "Brianna is very fast, and has been very consistent, but she just got a bit out of rhythm. Jess just has great control; she has walked only one batter in 34 innings."

Z-M scored all three runs in the second inning. Stacy Borgschatz and a run-scoring hit, and Megan Gregory and Sturm had RBI sacrifices. Z-M improved to 7-3, and Plainview is 7-4.
