Z-M sweeps tournament

The Zumbrota-Mazeppa softball team won its own four-team tournament Saturday, defeating Rochester Lourdes 2-1, Alden-Conger 14-3 in six innings, and Lewiston-Altura 4-3.

Lewiston-Altura finished second in the tournament with two wins and one loss. Lourdes took third at 1-2, and Alden-Conger lost all three of its games. L-A defeated Lourdes and A-C.

Z-M (6-1 overall) jumped on Lourdes starter Mary O'Connor for two runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Stacy Borgschatz opened with an inside-the-park home run, and Kelsey Benson scored on a sacrifice bunt by Analisa Frank. Lourdes had runners on second and third in the seventh inning, but O'Connor hit a ball back to Z-M pitcher Jessica Huneke to end it.

In Z-M's 4-3 victory over L-A in the championship, Cougars freshman Brianna Sturm struck out 14, walked none and allowed eight hits. L-A pitcher Trista Peterson gave up one walk and six hits. Maren Matthees and Megan Gregory got two hits for Z-M.
