The first phase of reconstruction is set to begin on one of the city of Rochester's largest public works projects.
Beginning today, 55th Street Northwest will completely close to travel between 44th Avenue Northwest and 50th Avenue Northwest.
Advanced warning signs have been posted on the route for two weeks as the city and construction contractors prepared for the project. The closure is the first phase in a larger project that will reconstruct 55th Street Northwest from 50th Avenue Northwest to West Circle Drive with an expected completion date of Sept. 1, 2017.
In future phases, 55th Street Northwest will be realigned between Fairway Drive and West Circle Drive, and an existing 55th Street connection to West Circle Drive will be replaced with a cul-de-sac about 400 feet east of Fairway Drive, according to city plans.
The closure beginning Wednesday will include the 44th Avenue Northwest intersection, a city news release said.
