A light question with an illuminating answer

How many lights have been installed at rural intersections around the area, and when will they be turned on? The illuminating answer is on page A2.

Dear Answer Man, exactly how many lights have been installed at rural intersections in the Rochester area. You know the lights I mean — the ones that haven't been turned on yet, ever. — Allen

Well, one of these days they'll be turned on, and hopefully it'll be a major safety improvement. Kristin Kammueller, community relations coordinator for MnDOT in this region, says the hangup has been with the contractor who was to hook up the new lights, not with the utilities. A new contractor is being hired and it's possible the lights will be wired fairly soon, she says.

How many lights have been installed? Thirty-five, by my count, scattered across Dodge, Goodhue, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha and Winona counties. I'll post the complete list on my blog at Postbulletin.com, but in Olmsted County, the lights are at these junctions:

• U.S. 14 and Olmsted County Road 3

• Minnesota Highway 42 and Olmsted County Road 9

• U.S. 52 and Olmsted County Road 19

• U.S. 52 and Olmsted County Road 31

• U.S. 52 and 520th Street

• U.S. 63 and Olmsted County Road 21
