Accident survivor says she will return to school

LEWISTON — The only survivor of an April 23 crash near Altura that killed three teenagers has spent the summer recovering from her injuries.

According to a message posted Saturday on Facebook, 13-year-old Cydney Maker of Lewiston has been doing physical therapy at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., and plans to go back to school in the fall.

"Thanks for being there for me, supporting me, believing in me, praying for me," the post says. "Keep the prayers coming I feel them!"

She's been keeping people updated on a Facebook page called Cydney's Road to Recovery Fan Club.

Her friends Shauna Marie Ruhoff, 16, of Lewiston; Morgan Elizabeth Zeller, 13, of Lewiston; and Katie Lee Hornberg, 14, of Altura, were killed in the accident.

The results of a Minnesota State Patrol investigation, released in July, shows that Ruhoff was trying to pass a 17-year-old Lewiston-Altura High School classmate when she lost control on a gravel shoulder on Winona County Road 27; she overcompensated, swerved across two lanes and hit the back of the other pickup. he pickup Ruhoff was driving rolled.
