Alleged assault lands man in jail

A rural Dexter man is in jail after he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend early Friday morning.

Officers were called shortly after midnight to the 800 block of Ninth Avenue Northwest on a report of assault and burglary.

According to the police report, a 21-year-old woman had told dispatchers that her 26-year-old ex-boyfriend had just entered her home and assaulted her 20-year-old boyfriend.

She told officers she and the younger man were asleep when they heard a noise coming from the lower level. They didn't investigate but said a few minutes later, the 26-year-old came into the bedroom and began to attack the other man with a flashlight.

The report says the alleged victim was struck several times in the head, shoulder and chest. He refused to be seen by ambulance personnel, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger, but an officer later took him to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin, where he was treated and released.

Mower County sheriff's deputies later found the 26-year-old's pickup in Dexter, located the man and arrested him, the report says.

He remains in the Mower County Jail pending formal charges. The Post-Bulletin typically doesn't identify suspects until they've been charged.
