Area schools make basketball history

Add Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Goodhue to the list of southeastern Minnesota schools that have won state championships in girls basketball.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats each made history with their first state championships.

Neither left any doubt, as P-E-M crushed New London-Spicer 72-42 in the Class AA championship game, and Goodhue thumped Maranatha Christian Academy 89-64 in the Class A title contest.

Neither was unexpected, either. Each was No. 1 in the state rankings for its class at the end of the regular season.

Last year, Dover-Eyota added its name to the long list of southeastern Minnesota teams with girls basketball state championships. Elgin-Millville won in 2005 before consolidating with Plainview. Caledonia (2009) and Cannon Falls (2005) are other champions since 2000. In 2005, Rochester Lourdes won its eighth state championship.
