AUSTIN — Austin letter carriers collected about 9,000 pounds of food Saturday during the 21st annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
That is less than last year, when nearly 11,000 pounds were collected, said Bob Rosel, food drive coordinator. He believes weather played a part in the drop because it was sunny in the morning but rained in the afternoon.
"I think that may have had as much to do with the local collection total, as much as I can tell," he said.
He said that the total, however, could jump up today because some people might have taken in their food in the rain and put it out today.
Smaller towns in Mower County also collected food during the weekend, he said. They tend to collect about 1,000 total pounds.

The food goes to local food shelves; in Austin, that is the food shelf at the Salvation Army.
