At Ellis Middle School, the Student Council really puts on a show for Veteran's Day. The day starts with Student Council members greeting veterans and escorting them to the cafeteria. After a cup of coffee and getting to know each other, the veterans are treated to breakfast. Student Council members eat with the veterans, after which the show commences.

All present are treated to the Ellis Middle School band, orchestra, and choir. I have had veterans tell me the performances by the musical groups are "as good as a record!"

The keynote speaker for many years, Norm Hecimovich, talks about what being a veteran means, and why it is important to show that one may be a veteran. He also talks to the student body by telling them the most helpful thing they can do for their country right now is to finish their education. After all, an educated population is necessary for democracy to function properly. The breakfast wraps up with the band playing "The Service Song Medley" whereby each branch's song is played and the veterans who served stand when they hear their song. It is a very moving experience.

At Ellis Middle School there is a long tradition of honoring veterans, and Ellis Middle School Student Council is excited to enjoy Veteran's Day with our heroes again this November.

Eric Vaughn is the Ellis Middle School Student Council adviser.
