Austin woman leads authorities on chase through two counties

AUSTIN — An Austin woman remains in the Mower County jail after leading police on a high-speed chase through two southern Minnesota counties on Friday.

After allegedly stealing $330 worth of merchandise from the Austin Walmart, the 26-year-old woman led Austin police on a high-speed chase in which speeds reached more than 100-miles per hour. According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, the woman hit one parked car in Austin, but was able to get away, cross county lines and reach Oakland in Freeborn County, which is 10 miles from the Austin Walmart.

After driving onto several residential front lawns in Oakland, the late model, red Chevy Impala stopped, Krueger said. The woman then fled on foot before Austin police caught and arrested her. The Mower County Sheriff's Department assisted Austin Police in the chase.

Krueger said the woman could face charges including multiple speeding and stop sign violations, felony flee in a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, fleeing from officers on foot and the original Walmart theft charge. As of Monday afternoon, The woman had yet to be arraigned or appear in Mower County Court.
