Authorities identify body recovered from river in Winona

WINONA — Authorities have identified the woman recovered Friday from the Mississippi River as 37-year-old Karena Kaminer, of Winona, according to Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand.

Passers-by reported seeing Kaminer on the Interstate Bridge on Friday morning. When an officer was dispatched to the scene, Kaminer was unable to be located — but authorities soon spotted what appeared to be a body floating in the water below.

Emergency responders recovered Kaminer's body less than an hour later. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brand said Monday that authorities have determined she jumped from the bridge and foul play is not suspected. An autopsy performed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester revealed she drowned, Brand said.

In her obituary, Kaminer was described as "a fun-loving, outgoing, caring person who had a great sense of humor." She was born in La Crosse, Wis.
