Bar fight leads to assault charges

WINONA — A Goodview man faces six charges of second-degree assault for allegedly stabbing three men in a barroom fight.

David Leon Powell, 39, of 4625 West Sixth St., was charged March 28 in Winona County District Court with the six charges, each with a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and/or a $14,000 fine. Bail has been set at $50,000.

The complaint alleges Goodview police were called to a local bar March 26 to break up a fight. When they arrived the first victim had pinned down Powell, who was holding a knife. The first victim said he had been counting money when people called him to break up a fight. He found the second and third victims on top of Powell.

The first victim threw Powell out the front door and when he did, noticed a puncture wound in his chest.

He and two other victims said Powell had been playing pool with one of the victim's uncles when Powell began to "smart off" to the uncle. The second victim told Powell to leave the bar. He and the third victim got into a yelling match and ended up in a fight and on top of Powell. The second two victims later noticed their wounds.
