Blinded motorist, bicyclist collide

Rochester Police say the driver of a pickup was blinded by the sun when he struck a bicyclist Tuesday morning.

William Hayes, 39, of Mazeppa, was unable to see because he was looking directly into the sun as he turned northbound onto 17th Avenue Northwest from Seventh Street, according to Interim Rochester Police Chief John Sherwin.

At that same time, 59-year-old Jerry Swank entered the intersection on his bicycle, and the two collided. Hayes knocked Swank off of his bicycle.

Swank was initially unresponsive, and then woke up; he was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys by Gold Cross Ambulance, Sherwin said.

No citation was issued because the men were determined to be equally at fault, Sherwin said.
