Boy found dead in luxury Manhattan hotel

An 8-year-old boy was found dead Friday and his socialite mother near death — with pages of a suicide note around her — in a room at a luxury Manhattan hotel, authorities said.

Police said that they're investigating the death at the five-star Peninsula Hotel just off Fifth Avenue as a possible murder and attempted suicide, and that prescription drugs were probably involved.

Police first came to a Donald Trump-owned apartment complex near Central Park around noon Friday after a relative from Belgium called police and said the 49-year-old woman, whose name wasn't released, had e-mailed her saying she intended to kill her son and herself, police said.

Police first went to the apartment complex and then to the Peninsula.

The boy was found in bed and the mother on the floor next to him a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official wasn't authorized to publicly disclose details of the probe and insisted on anonymity.

The woman was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
