A 5-year-old rural Byron boy has died.

Lukas Wharton, who was critically injured when struck by a car May 24 near his home, died of his injuries, according to a Facebook notice posted on Wednesday evening.

"Thank you everyone for praying, supporting and sending us love," the post says. "You have given us great strength. Lukas's pressures in his brain were extremely high all day the other day, Dr.'s did another scan of his brain and found really bad results. Lukas and Jesus are in heaven, we've told him it's okay, and that we will take him with us where ever we are. He was such a joy to us and we will continue to love him every day. He will be someone else's miracle. Take care, God bless. God is still good."

Lukas was playing outside with his siblings, riding down an embankment in a child's wagon, when a car driven by Myles Thomas Keller, 69, of rural Mantorville, came down 19th Avenue Northwest and struck the wagon.

A family member carried Lukas to the Wharton residence. Keller also drove up the driveway to the residence and called 911, according to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office. Lukas was taken by medical helicopter to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys Campus.
