Carl Sandburg addresses crowd in Rochester

1960 — 50 years ago

Winona Cotter High School will be a four-year high school next academic year. It has been a three-year senior high school. Enrollment at Cotter this year is 429 and is expected to be 650 after the change.

Attorney General Walter Mondale will be in Rochester for a campaign appearance. A luncheon is scheduled at Michaels and Mondale will speak briefly at the meeting of the Rochester Central Labor Union.

About 120 people attended a dinner for teachers of the Preston and Fountain school, sponsored by St. Columban’s Catholic Church. Ken Denny, PTA president, gave the response and thank you on behalf of the teachers.

1935 — 75 years ago

Carl Sandburg stood on the platform of the Armory and for more than an hour read poems, sang folk songs to the accompaniment of his guitar, and talked about this and that. More than 1,000 people attended.
