Con artist dupes Rochester homeowners
Rochester police are warning people in Southeast Rochester about a scam by a woman who goes around at night, knocks on doors and gives homeowners a story about her car breaking down or needing gas.
The most recent event happened Friday in the 800 block of 15th Avenue Southeast, according Rochester Police Capt. John Sherwin.
He said the homeowner reported the woman came to her door at night and told a story about her car being towed and she needed money. The homeowner drove her around and gave her money but got suspicious when the other woman kept changing her story.
She still gave her some money and later found money was missing from her purse, he said.
Police also learned the woman had been to other homes in the area, giving a similar story.
Sherwin said people need to be suspicious. If they give money, it could end up being used for drugs, he said.
