Confederate flag prompts assault, man claims

A Confederate flag was apparently the cause of an assault reported about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, officials said today.

That's when Rochester police were sent to Meadow Park Apartments, 412 14 St. SE, and spoke to a 32-year-old man. The man told officers he had been outside the building with his 13-year-old niece, who was wearing a hat with a Confederate flag on it.

A group of men approached and told her it was a racist symbol, the report says. When the man told them to leave the girl alone, he was knocked to the ground and assaulted, said Capt. John Sherwin. The group of men then fled.

The victim had "knots on his head" and was complaining of pain in his ribs, the report says, but refused medical attention at the scene.
