Construction complicates travel in Red Wing

Reconstruction of Highway 61 through downtown Red Wing is set to begin this week, according to Red Wing city officials and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The Phase 1 portion between Old West Main Street and Broad Street will include lane closures on Highway 61 from Fulton Street to Bush Street for installation of temporary traffic signals and utility work at West Avenue. Access from side streets is expected to be closed and will change as construction progresses along the roadway. Detours will be signed.

Phase 1 is schedule for completion on Aug. 21.

Other developments:

• Construction will begin on southbound Highway 61 first, starting at East Avenue and ending at Old West Main Street.

• Construction on the northbound lanes will follow, starting at Old West Main and ending at Broad Street.

• A truck detour for Highway 61 is planned for Goodhue County Road 66 (Pioneer Road). It is expected to begin after May 5.

The two-year, $9.7 million road reconstruction project includes utility improvements, traffic signal and corridor aesthetic upgrades. Meyer Contracting of Maple Grove, Minn., is the prime contractor.
